FOR STUDENTS

OUR STORY

With states racing to incorporate financial literacy credit requirements for high school graduation, Evansville’s Kerry Ao, Naina Muvva, and Cooper Croslyn sought to capitalize on the rapidly growing movement. As students at the nationally-ranked Signature School, the three co-founded Intertwined Finance LLC, or Intertwined for short, to meet the growing demands for financial education resources in and out of the classroom. Using artificial intelligence-driven lessons, Intertwined adapts its platform content to how each unique student interacts with it. Their mission? To accelerate the preparation of their peers for the financial world in a fast-paced and ever-changing global landscape.

While the founding team shares its passion for financial literacy education, their entrepreneurial story was (and still is) filled with potholes. As a matter of fact, the reason why the team even discovered the STARTedUP Foundation’s annual pitch competition, Innovate WithIN, was because they missed the registration deadline by four days in 2020. The following year in 2021, then-sophomores Ao and Croslyn made sure to make the deadline and pitched Splash Inc., an organic and biodegradable dishwashing detergent. The duo competed at Regional Finals but could not advance to the next round.

After reflecting on their entrepreneurial experience thus far, the two quickly concluded that they needed to pivot. As leaders of their school’s business club, they realized that club students failed to grasp financial concepts rapidly and effectively. They realized that boring presentations and articles weren’t going to cut it. What if, instead, they could develop a platform that immerses students in real-life financial scenarios like never before, using revolutionary AI developments to adapt the platform to how each unique student interacts with it? The team sought to do just that using engaging educational resources and simulations. With that, the idea of Intertwined was born.

The newly idealized Intertwined was pitched at the University of Evansville High School Changemaker Challenge (UE HSCC) to gain some traction. With Muvva joining the team, she and Ao pitched the novel idea and won the competition, winning full-tuition scholarships to UE. The Intertwined team used their win to their advantage and secured $3,000 in pre-seed venture capital funding to afford startup legal and utility fees. On March 30, 2022, Intertwined Finance LLC was officially incorporated.

Then-juniors Kerry Ao and Naina Muvva win the 2022 University of Evansville High School Changemaker Challenge with their idea: Intertwined Financial Literacy.

Their next hill: Innovate WithIN. What stumped the team last year suddenly fueled the co-founders’ engines. Ao, Croslyn, and Muvva won their region, received an additional $3,000 in capital, and advanced to the 2022 Innovate WithIN State Finals. During weekly Zoom meetings, the three were given the opportunity to pitch, receive feedback, and hear stories from a variety of experienced entrepreneurs including, but not limited to, Jeff Hoffman (Chairman of the Global Entrepreneurship Network), Sunny Lu Williams (CEO of TechServe), and Jeff Ready (CEO of Scale Computing).

While Intertwined did not place at State Finals, the trio did not look back. Using the lessons and experiences learned from STARTedUP programming, they adventured on the Tampa Immersion Trip, connecting and networking with serial entrepreneurs. In Tampa, Intertwined gained a valuable resource — a defunct financial literacy curriculum that now formed the basis of their “Basic Curriculum” offering.

A few weeks later, the team announced they had secured a $30,000 pre-seed investment, making the team join some of America’s youngest to raise venture capital. Working with Evansville-based software developer firm Lieberman Technologies, the Intertwined platform was completed in the fall of 2022. With the integration of AI in mind, the platform uses AI to help write curriculum and knowledge assessment content and for student interactions. For example, suppose a student misses a quiz question about how to budget a biweekly paycheck. In that case, instead of moving on to the next question, the AI automatically rewords the question and corresponding answer choices in a way that the student might better comprehend. This continues until the student answers the question correctly, demonstrating foundational understanding before the student can advance in the curriculum.

Intertwined worked with the Indiana Department of Education and several education service centers to pilot test Intertwined’s minimum viable product in classrooms across the state. They’ve accelerated company growth with their sales cycle, using AI to connect with more than 500 potential leads. The team has engaged with interested educators across 25 states, potentially impacting over 30,000 students. In the spring of 2023, Intertwined negotiated a partnership with Students Teaching Finance, a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing financial literacy and combating economic inequality nationwide through a network of volunteer educators. Most recently, they closed a deal with the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana to provide financial education resources for their after-school programs.

Because of these efforts, Ao was awarded Student Entrepreneur of the Year at the 24th Annual TechPoint Mira Awards in April of 2023. Honoring Indiana’s “Best of Tech,” per TechPoint’s article release, “the STARTedUP Foundation, which nominated Ao for the Mira Award, says Intertwined ‘has reimagined the way financial literacy education is taught in the classroom’ and ‘is on track to become one of the most promising student startups in the region.’”

Kerry Ao wins the TechPoint Mira Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award and poses with STARTedUP leadership, educators, and student participants: Izzy Branam, Hunter Stone, Sarah Ackerman, Kate Ryan, Faith Spencer, Emmani Ellis, Alex Termini, Alli Lindenschmidt, McKenna Houston, Don Wettrick.

Even with all of their progress, Ao credits the STARTedUP Foundation for teaching him the value of effectively pursuing every opportunity given. He says, "this mindset has helped my peers and me continuously grow throughout our entrepreneurial journey.” Ao explains that STARTedUP’s network, programs, and resources have been instrumental to his personal and professional development. With these experiences, he can work with community leaders to further foster the next generation of entrepreneurs.
